It’s Wednesday, and we’re still shivering at the assault of the massive cold front that invaded SA this past weekend. The more prudent among us decided against a day in the foul weather around Creighton on Sunday, but some hardier souls, including Mike and Denise Morgan, showed us up for the weaklings we are, and Mike came back with a bag of lovely images. Some excursions work out, others don’t. I’m sorry not to have gone, but what the hey, I’m a summer fellow, and morning temps were about 35 degrees C lower than I enjoy. For those still keen to experience the Creighton area in July, the train trips are still available this coming weekend and (I think) the following one. Please check the Creighton Aloe Festival website for details. Sunday 20 July sees those of us who enjoy aloes and bushveld scenery and don’t mind the dust on a day trip to the Middelrus area. It’s a little-known part of the countryside between Mooi River and Weenen, running through remote thornbush parts, emerging at the town of Weenen. Honestly now, who’s spent a day in Weenen? Nowadays it’s a run-down dorp with a few beautiful buildings that have survived the years, but has a history that reaches back to the time of Piet Retief and Dingane. Almost next door is the dramatic Weenen Game Reserve, operated by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, sporting a good variety of mammals and wonderful bird life. There are some folks travelling with me, and we’ll be leaving the Engen Station at Mooi River at about 6.30 on Sunday morning. For those wanting to travel independently, I’ll attach the map I prepared for Mooi Falls some time ago. It’s the same road, but remember not to turn off to the Falls. Please contact me for details if you need to. Take along a picnic lunch as we’ll go to a picnic spot in the Weenen Game Reserve for lunch and then drive back home on the main road to Estcourt and the N3. Hope a whole bunch of you can make it. It’s a lovely area.
