It’s Wednesday; but not just any Wednesday! This Wednesday is a celebration! Today as a free Black man I celebrate my Brownness. That’s right; my Brownness! I love my Brownness! I love the warm Florida sun for blessing my deep, dark honey Brownness and for honoring the pact we made to keep me that way. Keep me Brown! Keep this broad Brown nose and these thick Brown lips just the way they are... Brown! Brown like Ali and like Frazier. Brown like Isaac in that bad “Black Moses” chain link shirt. Brown and proud and saying it loud like James. Brown like Robeson and Ossie and James Earl - Brown and defiant like Othello. Brown like Jesus! I love my big, strong brown hands. Hands are fascinating anyway with all the marvelous things they can do, but I love my Brown fists, my Brown grip on the neck of my violin and my Brown fingertips in a gentle stroke of love. Beautiful Brown fingers stretched out across the keys making pretty music or stretched across the keyboard writing playfully about being Brown. It’s 3:30 in the morning but I had to get up and write cause I was feeling too Brown to lay down... to stay down. I had to get up! I love my anger and my compassion; I love my stubborn, cantankerous, unbreakable spirit all wrapped up in a sweet God given Brown package. Thank you God! Thank you! I love my broad Brown frame; my shoulders, back and chest but I may love my Brown thighs, legs and feet the best; they take me anywhere I want to go. You can’t stop a man who ain’t afraid to walk. You can’t stop a man who ain’t too proud to walk. Ain’t too proud to sweat... and sweaty Brown skin? (Smile!) Don’t act like you don’t know! LOL! Formidable is the man; not afraid to stand but Powerful is the man; not afraid to take a step! These 13’s been all over the world... just walking! Seems like my brain and my feet work together; the more I walk the better I think. I think my brain must be Brown! LMBO! I love my smile cause I love the contrast between my pearly white teeth and my chocolate fudge Brown face. LOL! I wear a beard cause I like the contrast between my face and that jet black hair... and even the gray hairs before I put the black shoe polish in it. (Add big Geoffrey Holder laughter.) I love all the Brown faces of my family and friends; my mother and father and my kids and my grandkids and my sister and brother and their kids and all my cousins; my friends from Lefferts Avenue and Tech and Salem and Brooklyn College and the Air Force and the music business. l love all my beautiful Brown fans; thank you! Thank you! Don’t get me wrong; I love all faces and all races; but today I just feel extra good about being Brown. I love being Brown! In fact; it’s a good day to be me; a free Black man! Now You do YOU! And maybe every Wednesday you’ll take a few minutes to appreciate you... just the way you are. You don’t have to be Brown... just Thankful! God bless! Happy Wednesday!
