It’s a “bittersweet” morning-after. The RSU experiment with Saco is over. If the polls are correct, in a week or so Dayton will follow suit, leaving Old Orchard Beach as RSU 23. Saco will elect its own school board in December. These boards will begin work as soon as elected, and in the meantime, the Saco members of the current RSU Board will act as a transition team until the new board is elected. Assuming Dayton follows Saco’s lead, the RSU will name the current members from Old Orchard Beach as the transition team for the RSU. Old Orchard will have to elect several more members to the RSU Board, but cannot do so until spring, and those elected will not able to take their seats until July 1st of next year My sincere hope is that we all make these transitions as seamlessly as possible, and not lose sight of what our primary responsibility is, and has been, to provide the best education opportunities we can for every child in every school, in every community.
