It’s a small world. And I don’t care if they say what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. You never know who you might run into. I was on an independent detachment flying Oceanographic Reconnaissance out of Bali, Indonesia (1982?). It was tough duty, we had to fly three times a week have the weekends off. AND we had to live in a tourist hotel cause there was no military housing. (we flew with civilians and they kind of paid the bills and called the shots.) Anyway one late evening I was swimming in the hotel pool, just taking my time enjoying the evening… There were two young ladies sitting at the edge of the pool and I could tell that they weren’t speaking English with a Aussie accent. I stopped in front of them, treading water and asked: “Where are you girls from?” “Oh we’re from the States.” “I’m sorry but that was obvious from your accent. Where in the states?” “We’re from Virginia!” “Really, from where?” “Arlington.” “Well so am I. What high school did you got to?” “Yorktown” “What about you” “Washington-Lee.” Do you know the (gave the last name of my in-laws) “Sure we went to school with Laura.” “This is sure a small world, I married her sister… Have a nice evening and vacation.” And I got out of the pool and headed back to my room to rest before the next days flight.
