It’s always encouraging to hear about the results of our work. The transient nature of seafaring life makes it difficult to track the impact we have on people’s lives but sometimes we get an email that makes doing what we do that much better. One such email came about two weeks ago from Manenteiti Tiitaka, of the Republic of Kiribati thanking us for our help and compassion in putting his life back on track. Several years ago while working for a large shipping company, he was asked to be an interpreter for other Kiribati crewmen who ran afoul of the law. Through a bungled court process he was incarcerated along with the guilt party for six months before the mess could be straightened out. Then arrested and imprisoned again by Immigration before he could catch his flight home because his visa expired while in prison. A SCI ship visitor heard about his plight and visited him in prison, we secured help from an ACLU attorney, advocated on his behalf with his company to get his job back, and helped him through his anger at the US for his ill treatment. This is an example of our saying “we work for world peace one seafarer at a time”. If you want to read about this in greater detail, be sure to get a copy of our March Anchor edition.
