It’s amazing how often a child’s mental illness and subsequent behavior issues are blamed on the parent(s). Please, do your research and know your subject before you speak out in ignorance. Sit in on the numerous psychiatrists, therapists, counselor appointments and hospital visits. Ride the roads all night long going into neighborhoods in which you’re afraid to go into to help that parent search for the child who has ran away. Hold that parent’s hand or their head while they cry their eyes out because they don’t know if their child is alive or dead or because they feel they have failed their child. Consider how many times they’ve wrestled with themselves wondering what they didn’t do that they could have done. Consider their financial investment of lost wages and medical expenses in a desperate search to find medical help and treatment. Talk with them about the fear they live in 24/7 of the phone call they know may come informing them that their child is in jail, in the hospital seriously injured, or even worse that they are dead. Ask them how many times they have cried out to God to show them what to do or begged Him to heal their child. You have no idea how much was required of a therapist to only somewhat convince the parent that you’re speaking of that if was not their fault; that they’ve done all they possibly could. And as you enjoy your life with your normal child, ask God to help you be as strong a parent to them as the parent of a child with mental illness is required to be.
