It’s been a tricky few days in the Peel household. Our littlest - TopicsExpress

It’s been a tricky few days in the Peel household. Our littlest one met with an unfortunate boiling water incident & was badly scalded. She is ok, if sore, & under the care of the Burns Unit. Although it has been difficult for her and us, it has served as a useful insight for me. Having had breast cancer twice, I know what it is like to be the patient, the one being treated. It was very clear what was required of me – to turn up, to be ‘brave’, to survive…. However, it is so very much harder when the person you love dearly is in pain. Having to stand by and watch medical practitioners (oh, how thankful for gentle, kind ones!) do very painful things to her, give her medicines that will make her feel unwell – it is, quite simply, counter-intuitive. To watch her cry & not be able to make it better feels so wrong. Through this experience, though, my little girl has helped me to walk in the shoes of those who love me most. She has lent me some small understanding of how difficult and uniquely painful it may be to walk the path of cancer beside someone who it is your job, your instinct, to protect. Parents, partners, brothers, sisters and many others out there are going through this on a daily basis. It chills my heart to even think of it, but I pray that my girls will be spared & that I never need to walk that path with them. For those of you who are/have been supporting someone you love diagnosed with cancer in pregnancy or in the year after, or if you know someone who is, maybe our Mummy’s Star Forums could help? There are currently 3 forums: one for affected women, one for their partners and one for other friends and family members. They are available to provide support and a private, secure place to chat with others in a similar situation and find comfort and inspiration. After all, no-one can really understand what something feels like unless they have been there themselves. Nicolette@ Mummy’s Star
