It’s been a year and ½ since I was the donor for my sister’s bone marrow transplant. Maggie called this time “the best year of my life.” Sadly, her cancer returned a couple of months ago. She tried another drug regimen, but to no avail. On Christmas day she was rushed to the hospital. Once there she decided to stop all treatments. She has tussled with lymphoma for ten years, and she is tired. She is home now, spending her last days with us, her adoring family. She is someone who has loved life down to its marrow, which is making it difficult for her to let go. She has loved everything and everyone—she is a lover. She has loved her children and their partners, her partner and his daughters, her sisters and nieces and nephews and their mates and kids, the natural world, her home, her neighbors, her friends, her state of Vermont, her work as a nurse practitioner, her gardens, her art. She lived like a wild hummingbird with so much energy and colorful beauty. Everyone she knew—her patients, the people who loved and bought her art, her friends, everyone—were touched by her kindness and humor and beauty. When I turned on the car the other day to drive north to spend this time with Maggie, the song playing on the radio was from the Broadway show Wicked. Where the two sisters sing to each other: “Because I knew you, I have been changed for the better. Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.” I think everyone who knows and loves Maggie would say that we have been changed for the better because we knew her. As fate would have it, Maggie’s show of new art is opening this coming Thursday. For those of you who are local, the opening is at the Mitchell-Giddings Gallery, in Brattleboro, Vermont, at 5pm. Maggie will be unable to attend, but it is going to be a beautiful way to be with her through her art. mitchellgiddingsfinearts/index.php/exhibits/upcoming-exhibits/maggie-lake-gone-to-seed#!WEB_Maggie_Lake__False_Solomons_Seal__2014__giclee_on_archival_paper
