It’s been about 10 ½ weeks since Colin’s accident. He is still an inpatient at TIRR and is continuing to make slow but steady progress. Here are some highlights of what is going on with Colin: • Colin’s left side is continuing to improve. His fine motor skills are improving; he can pick up dice and flip dominos with his left hand. It was quite exciting to see that as he did this in OT, the rate at which he did these tasks decreased with each successive try. He has also been playing video games on a special device that uses his left arm, hand, and shoulder. It’s fascinating how they incorporate technology into rehabilitation in such a fun way. • Colin’s voice is also getting stronger each day and his voice is starting to sound like Colin. This will continue to improve over time. • Colin’s vision is still a problem. He has double vision and things are still quite blurry. His double vision is being corrected for now with an eye patch. It will take at least 4 months for this to resolve. The blurriness will also lessen over time. His doctors are not correcting his vision with glasses right now because the prescription he would require today is quite strong. He will eventually have glasses once his vision stabilizes. • Some of the most exciting news is that Colin can now have liquids. He was cleared for liquids on Monday afternoon and immediately inhaled TWO chocolate shakes from Whataburger! (Thank you Jill Ribbeck for bringing them!) I’ve lost count of the number of shakes he’s had since then. I know Brandon Bain brought him a huge Chick Fil A shake on Wednesday and he inhaled that one too. I’ve also made about 6 shakes from the ice cream and milk in the patient’s freezer. I wonder if the hospital has noticed a sharp increase in the ice cream consumption! He is truly making up for all of those weeks when he couldn’t have anything. And chocolate shakes are good for the soul—he has seemed so much stronger and happier since he started this “diet”. Thank you everyone for your continued support and prayers. Colin’s recovery is going well but is slow and steady. The improvements are not obvious to those who see him every day but people who haven’t seen him for a while are very impressed with how far he’s come. We aren’t updating as much because there really isn’t much to say on a daily basis. Things are going very well and we are hopeful that Colin will recover from this terrible accident. Thank you again!
