It’s been said that many of my posts read as though they were written by a 5 year old using a crayon. The following will be no exception. When we talk about the great writers of the 20th century we think of Hunter S. Thompson, John Steinbeck, and Earnest Hemmingway. How about Dr. Seuss? Many of you reading this are still in college and have no kids and may not be able to relate, but hear me out. Many of Theodore Geisel’s books are fascinating in the way he tells you a children’s story, but hidden inside of it is the message of a completely different yet parallel story, it’s called an allegory…The Butter Battle Book is about the Cold War between the United States and Russia. Yertle the Turtle is about Hitler’s annexation of his eastern European Neighbors. Communism, socialism, the denigration of the environment, and a host of other social and political issues are all topics he covered during his career. One book my son Lech and I enjoy is the story of the Sneetches. This book is clearly about the holocaust but there are lessons within that we can all take with us today. In the book there are two clearly defined classes of Sneetches. There are those with stars on their bellies and those without. The ones with the stars look down on those without until one day a slick con-man Sylvester McMonkey MacBean comes to town and introduces them to a machine that will add a star to your belly to make you equal. After that machine makes everyone the same, he introduces another machine that will remove stars so the Sneetches can once again establish themselves as different thus elite. Chaos then ensues. “Off again! On again! Through the machines they raced round and about again.” The Sneetches eventually burn through their money, are left mixed up to the point that no one can no longer identify who is upper class and who isn’t. McBean then leaves town convinced that he has pulled a fast one but as it turns out, his con was actually a good thing because this was, “The day they decided that Sneetches are Sneetches, And no kind of Sneetch is the best on the beaches”. Over the past few days I have been accused of creating a culture clash between the box and field lacrosse communities, have been instigating trouble, running my mouth, fanning the flames of hatred, and fixing the rules to accommodate a certain type of player…These are just some of the quotes. If you believe any of this, this tournament is not for you,. The Tournament on November 30th isn’t about field players teaching box guys that they are better than them or that box players are the real men within the sport. This tournament is supposed to be a coming together of two communities for a common cause. If your intention is to show up to prove a point or teach someone a lesson, your better off staying home.
