It’s been seventy two hours since the unnecessary implementation of prorogation of the Guyana legislature and we’re still to see some robust move, amongst the Opposition, that is constitutionally related. Sovereignty belongs to the people Article 9 of the Guyana Constitution is a very pertinent place to start. The prorogue is intended to be a democratic tool and since Ramotar declared to the world that he has instituted the prorogue because his initiatives would have been defeated by the Opposition majority, he has brazenly shut down the legislative arm of the government to preserve his partisan initiatives. So why is the collective Opposition not saying and doing more to keep the spotlight on this coup against the people? Where are the ORGANIZED protests? Where are the human chains of politicians standing in front of EVERY government building? Where are the night watches? Rallies require attendance of all people, not those who are transported to protest. And calling for people to strike is not sound strategy either. Who has the bulk of the jobs in the country? Who owns the businesses? Who owns the taxis? Whose families will be affected by the lack of income during a strike? Which demographic will be most affected by repercussions after a strike? There is no doubt that the PPP studied its prey before pouncing with the prorogue. The lack of preparedness for this contingency was anticipated. The shameful fact of it all is that there was no forward thinking, no intelligent anticipation from Team Opposition. Maybe they’ll read this and make reading the Constitution a mandatory assignment for its lawyers. Maybe they’ll read this and appeal to the few allies that country has to let the Ramotar regime know that they only do business with democracies. Maybe they’ll suggest that the foreign embassies in the country leave. Maybe they’ll read this and appeal to the international community for military assistance. I don’t know what they’ll do but it has to be more than circulating pointless posters and retaliating with rallies that will not force the PPP to respect the Constitution and the people of Guyana.
