It’s funny to watch the movie “Wall Street” (1987) now. The “players” dress in suits with bright suspenders and slicked-back hair; they chain smoke in their offices; and call clients from New York City sidewalk payphones (except Gordon Gekko, who has a cellphone larger than a carton of cigarettes—with a pullout antenna just as long). Otherwise, the movie’s message holds up well. Sharply written and rich with financial details, it plays like a documentary on Wall Street and corporate greed and malfeasance—though ultimately I guess it wasn’t strong enough of a cautionary tale. Michael Douglas, Charlie Sheen and Martin Sheen are all great in it; Darryl Hannah, not so much.
