It’s game of numbers as Makueni votes...... MAKUENI; KENYA: More Makueni residents cast votes for Senate contest than for Governor and MP during the March elections. This, perhaps, highlights why Friday’s by-election is so important to the constituents. The Makueni trend was a contrast of the national pattern where less votes were cast for senators compared with MPs and governors. According to the official figures released by IEBC, 251,363 votes were cast in Makueni for Senate race in March compared to 251,006 for MP and 250,816 for governors. The votes cast include total of valid votes and rejected votes. The higher turnout for senatorial election might indicate the prestige people of Makueni bestowed on the position. Also, it does show the popularity of the late Senator Mutula Kilonzo who, despite the position of Senator being second to that of governor in the pecking order of power, attracted more voters. Mutula emerged victorious in the race garnering eight out of ten of the votes cast for this position. But, Kenyans will be eager to know whether his son, Mutula Kilonzo Jnr, running on the Wiper ticket, will command the same appeal today. If he wins and does not get eight out of every ten votes, like his dad, there might be a ‘small sense of defeat in the victory’. Without a doubt the by-election will be emotionally charged because of the many roadblocks Wiper has faced before getting Mutula Jnr’s name on the ballot paper. Also in today’s race are Mutula’s main challenger in the March elections John Harun Mwai (PICK), Jane Kitundu (LPK), Prof Philip Kaloki (Narc) and independent candidate Urbanus Muthoka Katumo.
