It’s hell out there! Hell, I tell you! That might be pushing it a bit: it is, in fact, just another Saturday night. But as with most Indian cities, once the sun goes down, so the entire suburb comes out to play. Not that evening brings a noticeable drop in temperature. You know it’s a spot sticky when your ears start to sweat. A game of doubles perhaps when the heat abates? Nor does this first post-Diwali weekend appear to bring a drop in spending power: shops are full, folk out in droves for dinner, and the kerbside fruit and veg boys are practically fighting them off. As a consequence, Telang Road is gridlocked. You know this by the Symphony for Horns from the queuing cars and cabs. As if in competition: no suburban Saturday, certainly not around Matunga, would be complete without the bells (Esmeralda?), chanting and strangulated cornet play from the temple scene (with added cow). And! If that were not enough – although, believe me, it is – the latest tower block under construction just down the road is still pouring concrete at 8 o’clock on a Saturday night. Astonishing! Little wonder that more high-rise spring up every year when the blighters build overnight. So, yes, just another sticky night in paradise.
