It’s important to stay relaxed during the first few weeks of school. These Transition Tips will help keep everyone anxiety free. • Clear your own schedule as much as possible: avoid extra projects in order to be free to help you child acclimate to the school routine and overcome the confusion or anxiety of the new school year. • Leave plenty of extra time to get up, eat breakfast and get to school. For very young children, make sure their classroom has your daytime contact information. • If the first few days are a little rough, try not to over react. Young children in particular may experience separation anxiety or shyness initially but teachers are trained to help them adjust. If you drop them off, try not to linger. Reassure them that you love them, will think of them during the day, and will be back. • Use this time to re-set positive bedtime and eating habits. Sometimes the availability of summer sweets and longer days alter the family habits you wish to encourage.
