It’s no surprise that Al Sharpton’s National Action Network is more corporate than Nickelback. Upwards of 50 sponsors – including PepsiCo, General Motors and Macy’s – help enable America’s least favorite cleric. One major U.S. corporation, which is almost an American icon, was asked to discontinue its support of the reverend by a major corporate watchdog. Their reaction will shock and infuriate you. Wal-Mart is, to many, synonymous with the American experience. Surprisingly, it’s also a major sponsor of Al Sharpton’s hate-a-palooza known as the National Action Network. The National Legal and Policy Center, a conservative watchdog group, has tried repeatedly to get Wal-Mart to drop the race-baiting reverend as one of their sponsored causes. However, in a letter to shareholders, Wal-Mart remained steadfast in their support of Sharpton. Story continues below. Sponsored by RevContent “Our support for NAN is focused on addressing health and wellness issues and other issues important to our customers and associates,” the letter read. “Our company will continue to support organizations that can further our mission to help people live better.” (H/T BuzzPo) Interestingly enough, the New York Post reported that, in 2006, the Reverend Jesse Jackson claimed Wal-Mart was trying to stifle criticism from the African-American community by attempting to “throw money at us.” After Jackson’s not-so-subtle accusation, Sharpton affected his best Captain Renault “I’m shocked – shocked… !” impression. “Wal-Mart has in no way tried to persuade me with money,” Sharpton said. Right, Al. And Tawana Brawley was telling the truth all along. It’s obvious these corporations aren’t supporting Sharpton because of the good he does for society. They’re supporting him because a rebuff of Sharpton is usually the impetus for him to sic his goons on them. If that’s the case, it’s unfortunate, but they’ll have to face economic pressure from the other side of the aisle. It must cost more to partner with Sharpton than it costs to incur his wrath. By supporting the National Action Network, Wal-Mart indicates it obviously doesn’t want my money, and I’m guessing it doesn’t want yours either.
