It’s not about me… In my role as school counselor, I - TopicsExpress

It’s not about me… In my role as school counselor, I listen, motivate, encourage, and teach skills to students in order to help them be a more successful student. This ministry some days wears me down with the heartbreaking stories of broken homes and abandonment. I am encouraged to focus on “self-care” because it is easy to get run down by helping others so much. It is important to take some time for myself; to eat well, be proactive in being healthy, and get plenty of rest in order to better serve my students and my family. I am not very self-disciplined, but I know my limits and seem to focus more on my mental state rather than my physical. I believe in myself. I surround myself with people who believe in me. I stay positive. I am CONFIDENT. I am CONFIDENT in Jesus Christ. He is my Savior and has restored my soul. These “I’s” wouldn’t be without Him. It is because of Him, that I am who I am and able to serve. We live in a society where “me” is #1. I love the purpose of the “I am Second” campaign. Their goal is to bring awareness to “God is first”, always. We are second. Even though I focus on myself and my confidence, nothing is compared to my focus on Him. He is first in my life. It is not about me… but being open to however he calls me serve and glorify Him. I recently heard from the Holy Spirit while praying for someone. I was praying for them to be a better person, make better choices, etc. and most of it was about benefitting me!! He quickly reminded me, “It’s not about you.” What?? We have a God who loves us unconditionally and forgives us every single day. When we pray for people, it should never be for selfish reasons. The only reason is so they will experience a true relationship with Jesus Christ; for them to fully understand what He did on the cross. When we are in the way, the Holy Spirit cannot completely intervene in their lives. We should surrender our heart’s desires for His desires. Our abilities and gifts should be given over to Him to use as He desires. We need to allow Him to work through us. “The God of all comfort, who comforts us all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” 2 Cor 1:3-4
