It’s nurses week, which always serves as a time of reflection - TopicsExpress

It’s nurses week, which always serves as a time of reflection for me. We hear it all the time “I could never do what you do”. But, isn’t that true for so many other professions? I could never work on power lines, design a skyscraper or negotiate the world’s biggest business deals. Nor, would I ever want to. But, I certainly don’t walk around shouting from the street at the man fixing the power line to “Keep up the good work. I could never do what you do”. So, why do people feel obligated to remind us that they could never do what we do? Why do they feel like they could never do what we do? Is it the sight of blood or the stick of the needle? We all bleed. We all know pain. Is it death? We all will die. Yes, YOU will die. If there is something you’ve been wanting to do, go do it! I don’t think any of those reasons are truly reasons why someone couldn’t be a nurse. Nursing is emotional. Nursing is vulnerable. Nursing requires you to feel. Nursing is REAL, and sometimes real, really hurts. I think people are afraid to see other people sick and hurting. That’s not fear, that’s compassion. I was raised with a “suck it up” attitude by a father who ironically can’t stand the sight of blood. Luckily, my mom allowed me to watch every episode of ER. (And now, you are thinking about George Clooney. This has nothing to do with George Clooney). That “suck it up” attitude has certainly served me well in this profession; but, nursing isn’t what you were taught by your parents. Nursing isn’t something you’ve learned in school. Nursing isn’t taking vital signs and administering medicines. Nursing is who you are. Nursing shows you who you are, and teaches you things about yourself that you would’ve never known otherwise. And then, nursing requires you to take everything you’ve learned about yourself, and set it to the side. Because, nursing isn’t about you. So, you can’t be a nurse. Don’t be. Be the best version of you that you can be. Be caring. Be compassionate. Be kind. Because the world needs compassionate plumbers too.
