It’s that time of year again for my annual “Things I’ve Learned This Summer”. Usually I write this before the Labor Day weekend but for the first time I actually had a Labor Day celebration and spent it with friends. For those who don’t remember or wonder why I choose to do this because I feel things change a lot during the summer. Remember when you were a kid and you came back to school, you and all your friends seem a little older and different in just three short months. Also, the year is almost over (3 more months to be exact) and honestly if what you promised to work on this year as part of your resolutions and or wanted something has not happened yet, chances are things won’t change in three months. So in no particular order this is what I’ve learned this summer or year so far. 1) Making friends is more rewarding than dating. 2) Getting what you need is just as important (and sometimes easier) as getting what you want but always remember that it should be temporary. 3) Me and sangria do not mix well, we are done professionally. I’ll stick to mimosas during brunch. 4) I am grateful to live in NYC when I can’t afford (I know sounds like a paradox) to go away. 5) The early bird catches the worm and movie matinees. 6) Fine, Brooklyn is pretty cool. 7) Heroes have to change and adapt with the times. The world is not as black and white as we want to believe, give Superman a break. 8) Sad to say True Blood needs to end, hopefully next year will be the last season. Also I’m going to miss Futurama. 9) Confronting mortality is no longer left for your twilight years. 10) First acts are really hard to follow and disappointment is inevitable (See Elysium). 11) “Bittersweet and strange finding you can change, learning you were wrong.” Means entirely something different to me at 32 and pretty much sums up my year so far. So there you have it, things I’ve learned this summer (or year so far). Feel free to share what you have learned too.
