It’s the largest single gift ever given to the IU campus in South Bend: a $5.85 million donation to the College of Health Sciences. The donation comes from the Vera Z. Dwyer Charitable Trust, connected to the founder of Dwyer Instruments—a gage manufacturer still headquartered in Michigan City. $2.5 million will be used for scholarships—enough to help another 60 students each year. 20 percent of the scholarship proceeds will be set aside for students from LaPorte County. Furthermore, $1.5 million will be used to create the endowed Vera Z. Dwyer Distinguished Chair in Advance Nursing Practice, luring an expert in the field to campus to teach. Finally, $1 million comes in the form of a guaranteed matching pledge for the Health and Wellness Center on campus to offer low cost services to the community at large.
