St Patrick’s day was originally celebrated in Ireland and subsequently in other parts of the world where Irish communities settled with parades and parties. It is a day (17 March) to commemorate the death of Saint Patrick, who introduced the catholic religion to Ireland. He used the shamrock or clover leaf as a metaphor to explain the trinity (the Father, Son and Holy Spirit), hence the significance of the symbol to the Irish. Today the event is celebrated all over the world by Irish and non Irish alike and is known to be a time for fun and merriment. Every holiday can be made that much better when you take a little extra time to get into the true spirit and flavor that the celebration was meant to have. Here are some tips on how to celebrate the occasion: 1. Wear something green Anything really – a shirt, trousers, hat, shoes, etc! 2. Learn the basics of Irish slang Sláinte! (slan-chuh)– Cheers! Whats the craic (crack)? - Wheres the fun? How she cutting? – How’s life? Gob smacked – Stunned Grogg – Beer Bang on! –Exactly right! Jacks -Washroom Blarney – Skillful flattery Malarkey -BS 3. Learn an Irish limerick, saying or joke Ex. Heres to a long life and a merry one. A quick death and an easy one. A pretty girl and an honest one. A cold pint and another one! Ex. “There was an Old Man with a beard, Who said, It is just as I feared! Two Owls and a Hen, Four Larks and a Wren, Have all built their nests in my beard! 4. Get ready to party! 5.
