It’s tough to find good books for boys who are not yet confident readers. “Phineas L. MacGuire gets Slimed” by Frances O’Roark Dowell is a book that will interest boys and is not a difficult read. Phineas is a fourth grader who loves science. In this easily read chapter book he laments about his nail polish obsessed baby sitter and plans a mold museum for the basement of his school. The mold museum doesn’t pan out but readers interested in learning how to make penicillin or a mold terrarium will find instructions in the back of the book. Get your boys (or girls) to read this book and then do the science experiment s– it’s a two-for-one deal! Anyone from 4th grade up who likes a great action story will love Dee Garretson’s “Wildfire Run.” The story is about Luke, the son of the President of the United States. A major earthquake strikes in Missouri and the ripple effects are felt all the way to Camp David where the first family is staying. Wth dry conditions in the Catoctin Forrest, and a careless family camping in the park, a spark from an old fire sets off a large fire which jeopardizes Luke, the Secret Service agents and his two friends. With just their own seventh grade intelligence the three friends have to find a way to break through all the security fences to flee the fire. Readers likely won’t be able to put this book down – I certainly couldn’t. “Where I’d Like To Be” by Frances O’Roark Dowell is a good book for middle school girls to read. Maddie is an Orphan at the East Tennessee Children’s Home and she misses her Granny Lane tremendously. One day an eleven year old girl (Maddies’ age) enters the home and changes her life. As the story develops a group of children from the orphanage and the local school develop a friendship and decide to build a fort in one of the children’s backyards. This story is about the loss and discovery of family, being an orphan and discovering what it really means to have a home. Happy reading!
