It’s unconscionable that Michigan voters can expect to find gold in the streets easier than seeing major-party candidates debate one another in advance of an election. It means the loud, distorted cant of high-priced campaign ads is the only exposure most voters will get to the candidates seeking their support. And it means truth — ferreted out in a neutral setting, with independent questioning and a display of competing ideas — becomes elusive, if not impossible to find.
