Ive always been careful to err on the side of caution when it comes to recounting my convention encounters ;) Ive been to the Vegas Trek convention several times. both as guest and as an actor flacking his wares but always at the previous venue, the Hilton. The Rio is a whole new deal. It is, as The Donald might say, UGE! The rooms are great. I always enjoy running into old friends. There is this tendency towards what I call CONGLAZE...particularly among the actors. ;) I greet Chase...and Chase, on her phone, in CONGLAZE mode gives me a mechanical, profunctory smile - she has no clue who I am. Nor does Tim Russ, tho I call out to him. EVERYONE is calling out to Tim...must be just another fan...and Tim keeps on walking. Dominic looks at me with bemused indifference; I KNOW he has no clue who I am (tho in his defense, I was generally in make up whenever we worked.) Tony Todd I stand in front of for fully 3 minutes as he passionately discusses a role with a fan. Then he suddenly focuses, recognizes me and reaches out to hug me. Its all fun, weve all been there. Somehow the casino and the convention conspire to create this maelstrom of lights and sounds and bells and surrealism. So when I encounter Steve Rankin and Vaughn Armstrong in the casino, we see each other, we recognize each other and were all kinda, Is this really you, is this really happening....? Well yeah. And Im sorry I didnt get to hear them play, Im told they really rocked! Our Enterprise panel was fun. John Billingsley is witty and thoughtful, Dominic is kind of this stoned, irreverent presence, Scott is our Jefe and a more gracious leader you could not find. I hope the attendees enjoyed it as much as I did.
