Ive always had a good memory for strings of numbers. I have no sense of direction. This is why I prefer exit numbers to go north after three miles of interminably twisty roads and then take a right when it comes to directions. Driving from an event in an unfamiliar place to catch a plane at an unfamiliar airport with no time for screw-ups means loading mileages and exit numbers into my noggin. At the crotchety old age of 52, I suddenly have experienced a mild degradation of my skill with number retention. It isnt that I forget the numbers - its that Im no longer certain I remembered them. Did I remember correctly? I check - yep - remembered it correctly. Wait. Is that right? Yep - its right. You know, even if you correctly retain information, if you have to keep looking it up to confirm that you did, you might as well have not remembered it at all.
