Ive always said if I had to pick another job Id be a coach. With that said, I dont envy coaches who coach kids in todays world. Parents today are to worried about protecting their kids feelings and wanting them to be the star. Sports isnt always fair. There are cases when a kid may bust his ass to get better and another kid who works half as hard is still the better player. If I was the coach, Im playing the kid who gives me the best chance to win unless he is a bad teammate, etc. etc. I hear parents all the time in my profession talk about how coaches are unfair or show favoritism to certain kids, etc. etc. I want to say whats not fair is you filling your kids head with this talk instead of pushing them to keep fighting and working to get better so that they can contribute to their teams success somehow. When I was 8 years old, I made a 9-10 year old All Star team in baseball and we played 5 games. I never got to play a single game. I complained to my dad and he told me something I remember like yesterday. Im telling you this one time and one time only. Until you are good enough to leave the coach with no choice but to play you if he wants to win, keep your damn mouth shut. Honestly, it hurt and I can still see him saying it 28 years after the fact. I dont say this in a cocky way, but I played in front of those guys once I got to high school b/c of the vision my dad gave me at an early age. If he would have said Son, you are right Im not sure my fire gets lit and who knows what road I travel. All I know is that truer words have never been spoke and he was dead on. Im not saying my dad loved me anymore than the parents I hear complaining, but I know because he loved me that he gave it to me straight.
