Ive been Tagged by Yvonne Taylor Artist to pick 3 landscape paintings that inspire me.. so Ive been having a wee think and going through some of my books. Hard to choose any one particular work, I tend to firstly not look at much art as I like to try keep my mental idea pool clean but I have a few artists I like because on discovery I found their compositional style and intent is very much the same as my own. That is a whole other can of worms, how you can see a picture which is so close to what you wanted to depict makes you wonder why/what these universal scenes are so appealing. So first up is “The Falling Mist Waterfall at Mount Kurokami in Shimotsuke Province” by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). There is a few things I dont like about this picture, like the figures for a start. But that was part of the style of that era. I never have human elements. The technical style of his work I do love, so clever, it was hard to choose one painting. I love his snow ones the best, and the deep Prussian blue color he used a lot is a color i love. So as a artist as a whole hes a favorite, but this picture because of its flow and movement, but its part of a set so the whole body of his work has this kind of style he was clearly constantly adapting and perfecting. If you break the picture down into zones and elements he seems to have some basic rules he stuck to which made for pleasing scenes. Second picture by Soichiro Tomioka (japonais, 1922 – 1994). untiltled snow I found this guys work during my nightime tree line series in September last year. The tree works are disturbingly the same as what I was trying to do, but he also does these large very minimal snow works. I really want to get a book of his complete works. This is just one I picked, cant say I have a favorite, they are all brilliant. His composition ideas are dead on. I wouldnt change anything. Third is Kaii Hagashiyama. (東山 魁夷, July 8, 1908 - May 6, 1999) Google him, every single painting is amazing. I almost dont want to see any more! Yugen - Mountain Mist lastly is pretty much everything I want to do, thats how I see the world. I guess thats what I was looking for, the pictures I like, or the artists I like, they see / saw the world the same way you do. Some is closer to reality, some is more mysterious and magical, is that any less reality? Are any of these even landscapes I dunno, but thats 3 paintings I really like. If I had to pick out something non eastern I really like the guy that did those classic UK train line posters with the graphic sty-lings and big billowing clouds, canny mind his name. But I guess even they were kind eastern looking. Thats been mine! Thanks Yvonne.
