Ive been a Dan Malloy supporter since he first ran for governor in 2006. In 2010, David Katz and I spent long hours making phone calls for a candidate who seemed destined for a blowout loss. But he won the primary, and three months later, squeaked through in one of the closest elections in state history. I havent always agreed with what the governor has done over the past four years, and I havent hesitated to say so. But the fact remains that he has been the best governor of Connecticut in my lifetime (all 18 years of it). He has made real efforts to deal with our states long-term fiscal problems while fighting for progressive priorities, no easy task. He has shown dogged leadership in the face of everything Mother Nature has thrown at this state over the past four years. And when evil struck at the very heart of our state on a winters morning in Newtown, Governor Malloy responded with grace and courage. He grieved as we all did, and he responded with action, determined to fight the scourge of gun violence no matter the political cost. We now have the strongest gun control laws in the country, and we have Governor Malloy to thank for it. As of yesterday morning, we know that the governor is running for reelection. I know there are many liberal Democrats who are disappointed with some of what has gone on in Hartford since 2011. I am as well. But when you look at the whole picture, its clear that while Governor Malloy is not perfect, he is a strong and effective leader who shares our values. He needs and deserves our full support in the campaign ahead. I know Ill be there for him. I hope you will be too.
