Ive been a champion of the many good examples and accomplishments of good public schools, because I dont think theres a viable alternative that responds to the need to educate ALL our children to be as successful and productive as they can be. That said, Im increasingly appalled by the sheer lack of common sense, good judgment, and any respect for ones basic rights on the part of a number of teachers and school districts throughout our country. A couple of examples:. A child was prohibited from bringing his Bible to school to read in his free time before it came to the attention of the news media. A Poway high school tried to prohibit a student from wearing a Jesus T shirt. At a Rochester Hills high school wherever the h--- that is) a uniformed Army officer was prohibited from coming onto the campus with his son because the uniform may offend somebody?!!! Now, today I read that a DC teachers homework assignment to his/her 6th grade class was to compare President Bush with Adolph Hitler. When confronted with publicity, both the teacher and school district apologized. Sorry, apologies in these cases wont do. There is something askew in these peoples basic ethos.These and no doubt other similar acts are such blatant examples of poor judgment that the perpetrators need to be removed from opportunities to repeat such acts. I would hope the new Common Core curriculum for our children would include a Common Sense component for teachers and administrators who need it. All this just makes me appreciate the many good -- no, make that, outstanding -- teaching professionals and administrators I know that are out there.
