Ive been asked a few time, and conservative blogs are screaming, about the Air Forces decision to allow an atheist Airman to reenlist without saying the words, So help me God. Let me give a little food for thought...if I want the freedom to say those words, pray in public, etc; then shouldnt I be the first person to offer the freedom not to do that? What I have a problem with is when outside organizations try to threaten and bully schools, communities, and the military into changing things for everyone because of the opinions of a minority, or of no one at all. I have absolutely NO problem when an individual within an organization requests not to do something at odds with their beliefs. So, if the ACLU or Citizens United for the Separation of Church and State were to try to sue the Air Force and force them to remove the words So help me God for everyone, then I think we should tell them where they can go...Mars. However, if this one Airman doesnt want to say those words, then its no skin off my nose (although he IS swearing to defend a document that recognizes the existence of God over and over...awkward!). As Christians, I think we do more harm than good trying to force these types of things on others. Maybe instead of focusing on four words in an oath that isnt going to change anyones view of faith, we should let our lights shine so that the world will see our good deeds and praise our Father in heaven!
