Ive been asked to post a letter received from SHS senior Cara McConaughey as she is not yet a member of Scituate Monthly. Thank you for your participation Cara. Happy New Year and (hopefully) New Middle School! Although its been years since my time at Gates Intermediate School - I am now a senior at SHS - I vividly remember experiences that should not be occurring at a public school. In 7th and 8th grade, one of my classrooms used to be a closet. However, that was only the first of the problems with the space. During the two years, whenever it rained outside, it also rained in the classroom, ruining posters on the walls, desks, carpet, etc. We had to have the kids whose desks ran along the window sill sit on the floor during those rainy days to avoid the rain. I recall a moment during the 8th grade when there was a sewage issue. The entire hall smelled so strongly of sewage that we had to have class in the library for the entire week. Furthermore, I know there are visible issues with mold in the ceiling and on the floors, as well as outdated features that do not provide a safe and encouraging learning environment. I am also FOR the new middle school because of the planned new high school auditorium. Currently, when school wide events take place at SHS, they are always in the gym which has poor acoustics and is not ideal for performances. The current auditorium cant even fit more than one class at a time without it overflowing. Additionally, the arts have blossomed at SHS within the past 4 years, so to have a place where art students can proudly show their work would be ideal. Please vote yes for the new middle school and help to make this a happy new year for Scituate!
