Ive been awake a while, reading through tons of posts and comments about autism and raising autism in regards to school and following through with tasks. I read such desperation and frantic How do I fix it NOW? words, and I always want to respond....but most of the time I dont. Heres what I would like to say....here is what I wish parents in that place were READY to hear.... Its ok. Its not perfect, but its ok. Your child isnt a failure because they dont do things like the others. Your child was made to do things differently. Forcing them to be like their peers IS going to create problems for you....because its not going to happen. You need to encourage growth and change, but YOU need to be open to that for yourself too. Sometimes that means letting your child go free for a time just so you can see where they are without anybody else telling them who to be and what to do. Childhood isnt a road to being somebody. It isnt a stepping stone to who they will become. It is a moment in that persons life. They arent becoming somebody. They ARE somebody. Right now. Dont change them to make it easier on you. Build on who they really are. And calm down a little. Seriously.
