Ive been catching up on about 200 seasons of Doctor Who, as Flapjack is a fan. Last night was Vincent And The Doctor. One of the finest 40-odd minutes of TV Ive ever seen, and this final scene where they take the troubled, self-loathing Vincent forward in time to see how his art is appreciated after his death is astonishingly moving. Our entire system of reward-for-art is built around telling people who are already celebrated how great they are. We give music awards to the biggest selling artists, as though being the biggest selling artist isnt already award enough. It just consolidates the bullshit of fame=meaning. (the reason, obviously, is that awards shows are money making ventures, not about the art at all... give awards to famous people and their fans will watch and talk about it, so the sponsors are happy, and everyone goes home rich) But from this comes the injunction to never leave those whose art moves us, changes us, challenges us and inspires us in the dark about what they mean to us. Tell them. Its a way better Christmas present for any artist than a box of biscuits or some festive socks. :)
