Ive been discussing the death of my washing machine. Were so - TopicsExpress

Ive been discussing the death of my washing machine. Were so spoiled to our luxuries. My mama helped her mama do laundry BY HAND with a washboard and water boiled over an open fire in a large tub. They finally got modern appliances when my mom was a teenager. This was still a very basic machine and it just agitated the clothes to wash them. You had to take the garment out, wring it out by hand as much as you could, then you put it into a wringer which had two rollers that you placed the garment in, it clamped down and you turned a handle to turn the rollers, thus pushing the garment through and squeezing out the excess water. Girls, how would like to do your laundry like that today? Luckily for this aspect of having to do laundry by hand, they didnt have a lot of clothes themselves, but they took in other folks laundry to earn money to EAT and it was a lot of work. Combine that with mama working in the dairy and she was rail thin from hunger and over work by the time she met my Daddy. Now just in case you think this sounds like an adventure... try it in the middle of a cold winter, trying to wash clothes out by hand and when you go and lay the clothes on the fence, they freeze. And you freeze. Your skin is rough and dry from exposure to the cold and so much water. Yep, those were the good old days. My mama worked hard for every jot and tittle she has.
