Ive been doing the whole 30 Days of Thankfulness on my personal FB page, but I feel like this one belongs here, because Ive talked about it at length and its directly tied to the boys - particularly Sams - ADHD, ODD, and anxiety. Today Im thankful for our amazing behavioral and family therapist. She is so great with Sam and so patient with us. I very much want results yesterday (in everything, not just with Sam), and she gives me a dose of reality, while at the same time keeping my eye on the prize and letting me know its not so far away. She has provided our family with valuable tools in dealing with the angry, frustrated outbursts (Sams and ours). Its pretty clear she adores Sam, but she doesnt let him get away with anything. And most importantly, she makes Sam feel heard, which is a huge deal for a kid who has such poor self esteem and thinks his voice doesnt matter. Although I forget this sometimes, weve come a loooooong way since we first stepped foot in her office 2 years ago. And Im also extremely thankful for our marriage counselor. Matt and I carried around a huge deal of resentment and anger because a) thats what happens too often when youve been together the better part of 2 decades, and b) when you have kids with special needs, that anger can become heightened. Our marriage counselor has probably single handedly saved our marriage by teaching us to communicate openly with one another, respect one anothers needs and wishes, and to be partners, not adversaries, in raising two very special kids. She still keeps us on track too. Weve found that talking to her when things are good is just as important as talking with her when were in crisis mode. Thank God for them both!
