Ive been enjoying the book recommendations and reviews people have been posting recently. I thought Id share a brief review on one of my favorite books ... Baseballs Great Experiment: Jackie Robinson and His Legacy by Jules Tygiel. This is an excellent book on the story of Jackie Robinsons rise to the major leagues. It provides excellent background into the story of Branch Rickey and his desire to integrate baseball and of what Robinson and his family went through in 1946 & 47. The last third of the book talks about the integration of other major league teams from 1947-59, which is very interesting though not quite as compelling as Robinsons story. Tygiel excels at tying in the Robinson story into the larger story of civil rights in the US, making this as much a sociology and modern history book as a baseball book. Though I found it bogged down a little bit at the end, this book is definitely worth the read for anyone interested in the broader view of the Robinson story.
