Ive been following this issue for a while and have not jumped in as I dont feel as though my thoughts are fully formed yet. Im trying to come at this as a dancer, competitor, teacher, judge, and event director. If I bring up something that has already been covered, please forgive me. Im worried that dancing in the non-traditional gender role would become a gimmick and that is where my primary concern lies. I know that there are men who only lead and women who only follow, however, if this transition takes place, we cant control who enters where. I want to maintain the integrity of our contests and dont particularly enjoy watching dancers imitate the role they are dancing. I encourage my students to learn to both lead and follow, however, as competitors I would like to see dancers specialize in either the lead or follow role rather than jumping back and forth. To help with this, as well as the overpopulation of the lower divisions as the transition took place, has it been discussed to possibly require dancers to declare what role they will be competing in for any given competition season whatever that is determined to be? I welcome any politely worded discussions on the matter :)
