Ive been getting a lot of requests to pick my brain lately. I really hate saying no, especially since a lot of you are friends. The problem is consulting is how I make my living and I already live on a very busy schedule. Here are the few occasions Ill let people pick my brain: 1. Im already dead and youre a zombie trying to eat it 2. You accidentally meant to say pick my nose - in that case you are welcome to pick my nose any time - it can get itchy at times (see https://youtube/watch?v=r-nxassBHac) 3. I have some extra time and doing it benefits the future of an industry or humanity (I like doing this with students, for instance, but only on occasion as Im able) 4. What you provide is more valuable or equivalent in value to what I provide 5. You pay me (my rates start at $500/hr with an hour minimum) So basically your only options are #4 and #5 (unless you really want to pick my nose) - so this is your opportunity! If you want to pick my brain or anyone elses brain, make it worth mine or their time. Sell them on why that would be valuable to them. Help them understand that what you have to provide is worth more than $500/hr. BTW, this even applies to #3 - youve still got to convince me there as well. Like I said, I really hate saying no, but this is my livelihood! When you ask to pick my brain you are asking for $500 worth of free stuff from me. Would you ever do that to a real friend? So please think twice before asking to pick someones brain on a topic they make a livelihood on. Its not fair to put them in that position, and often a huge waste of their time.
