Ive been having one on one conversations with a new generation of youth who have been selected to interview for full ride scholarships. We have to find ways to evolve beyond coding our communities as negative spaces. I love how at the beginning of our conversations I hear them say words like no opportunities, no role models, no resources, and no motivation and after 2-3 conversations with some intentionally reconnection and mind jiggling, they come to the realizations that although our communities were limited in academic resources, they are filled with role models of work ethic, perseverance, passion, selflessness, and love. Seeing their faces light up and feeling their spirits ignite when they realize they arent only prepared to succeed in college but become world healers, shapers, and changers makes me want to set up go pro cameras at all these interviews and make a bad ass movie with an awesome Barney Stinson approved mix!
