Ive been in Lebanon in recent days. The country is under huge pressure from the crisis in Syria. It has a small geographical area with a population of under 4.5 million; the refugee population is now 1.18 million- the highest number per capita anywhere in the world. I visited the Bekaa Valley with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. A significant number of refugees are residing in rough tented settlements in the fields and on the outskirts of towns and villages there - they are the poorest of the poor. We sat with a family with five children. The only breadwinner was the twelve year old daughter - this is the face of the lost generation. UNDP is also focusing on the needs of the host communities, many of whom are also poor. Both Lebanon and the Syrian refugees need international support right now. The photos show us meeting with the family; people by the tents; and me with the Prime Minister of Lebanon in Beirut.
