Ive been intending to make a 1560s kirtle and gown for ages. I have the smock almost done. I located the fabric I had in mind for it. I have put off starting the dress because Id like to lose a few more pounds, but F it, I can take in a dress, and by the time I lose the weight, Ill know more and want to start over with a new dress anyway. Thinking in 3 dimensions in fabric is really hard for me, and Ive never done anything nearly this difficult in womens clothing - shaped skirts? attached to a bodice with a pointed front? My existing skirts, which most of you have never seen, are rectangles cartridge-pleated to waist bands. Pants are the bane of my existence, but at least theyre an old, familiar bane. Doublets are a PITA, but I know how to make them. I have attached one bodice to a skirt, and it was the second piece of garb I made and a long time ago, so a simple kirtle is exciting and new. This is pretty exciting for me because most people I know do earlier or later periods than the 1560s, and its all new to me. The fabulous Kat Ferneley has a gorgeous middle class outfit that has been part of my inspiration to look at this era. #1560s
