Ive been living with bipolar disorder for over half my life now. It really helps that I chose a psychiatrist who doesnt let me be a know-it-all and play doctor. My doctor doesnt let me get away with much, in spite of my knowledge. My psychiatrist is supportive of me sailing on my own and solo sailing to Catalina. She is supportive of me enjoying my life and having a good quality of life. She diagnosed and is treating me for mild hypomania (which is a very very mild form of mania...not significant mania). However, she is treating it aggressively to protect and prevent real full-blown mania. I was diagnosed based on two things: 1.) The difficulty Ive had lately staying asleep. My sleep has been disturbed lately and Ive been waking between sleep cycles. People with bipolar disorder are so sensitive to sleep. An upset with sleep can lead to a significant episode down the road. 2.) I feel this intense electricity in my body. It feels like trapped energy. It is the earliest warning sign that I am experiencing a degree of mania. Usually getting some good R&R or boating will take care of these feelings...but this week, the feelings have been affecting my body even when Im on my boat. So it is more concerning. As a result, I am about to take medication that is going to really sedate me for a few days and then I get to stabilize for a week and go sailing and then Ill get to go back to work when my doctor gives me the green light. If I post while sedated, nothing that I say counts...unless its really good. :)
