Ive been looking at the RFQ for the library at lunch here. Please forgive me if this has been posted before. The existing library will be torn down, so those who characterize this as a library expansion arent exactly accurate. The existing library is about 20000 square feet according to my estimates from looking at it on google earth. The new proposed structure(s) will include a library space of between 43500 sq ft to 47500 sq ft. So I guess from that standpoint we are looking at a library expansion. However what is not discussed I dont think is the hotel/multi-family/retail space aspect of this project. Also the project will not only encompass the lot that the library sits on now but also the lot immediately to the east of the library. Ultimately we could be looking at a huge structure or structures comprised mostly of a hotel, multi-family housing, retail space and a library facility somewhere on the premises. This is prime real estate and the developer who gets this project will be quite fortunate. This process should be carefully considered to determine if this is really what the visioning committee really wanted or has their vision been twisted into some huge commercial development that will enrich some developer. It will be interesting to see where all this goes. Personally I think such a development would ruin the small town atmosphere we have around the Marion square. But hey this is up to the citizens of Marion to decide.
