Ive been off and away for the last 5 days, but its never too late for this warm New Year reminiscence: When we were little pre-pre-teen kids in Stapleton in the early 1960s, on New Years Eve Mom and Dad would tuck us into bed between 8 pm and 9 pm, as usual. But around 11:30 they would come in to our rooms and wake us up again. There was work to be done. We would go to the kitchen window at midnight, and at the very stroke of 12 we would all yell Happy New Year repeatedly out the window in our loudest high-pitched kiddy voices, and bang pots and pans together. The banging on pots and pans was the highlight of the month. What a thrill! Moms pots and pans were precious to her, we came to learn in later years when we got much older, but for those few moments each year as the new year arrived she was happy to let us have our way with her precious cooking tools for the sake of our own joy. What a gal! Thanks, Mom. Happy New Year!
