Ive been off-line for most of the week -- our house has been invaded by a nasty virus and Ive been nursing a sick husband. I didnt see this post, which originally appeared in Daily Kos until yesterday. While Im glad to see the John Birch Society being mentioned in articles, blogs, and tweets, Im not sure how to respond to this : The Birchers need to win only another 50 seats to reach majority status in the House of Representatives. They hold 168 seats now. Thats 50 more seats to reach majority status without support from Business Republicans. To say that 168 Congressmen are Birchers deflects from the real issue with the radical right. More than likely, whomever is counted in that 168 would deny being a card carrying member. Since the Birch Society has never released membership numbers or names - except for the leadership and a few members whove identified themselves -- specific accusations dont, in my opinion, help our cause. The danger today is that radical right wing extremism has become mainstream. I think the Democratic leadership has made a huge mistake in not calling out extremism -- loudly and often -- and tagging the GOP for harboring anti-govt libertarians, anarcho-capitalists, tickle-downers, racists, climate-deniers, anti-public schoolers and a host of other folks with dangerous, divisive, and just plain awful ideas. Are all of these people John Birchers? Probably not. Does it matter? The GOP has built a big tent that has space for every right wing nut job, crackpot, and crank. Theyve also welcomed the libertarians -- and helped them in selling the old Reagan idea that government is the problem. Im convinced that the big challenges to the left are these 1. Point out that radical right wing ideas are now mainstream ideas. 2. Explain how right wing ideas will impact individuals. For example, what would cuts to Social Security mean to seniors and their families? 3. Make a strong case for progressive policies like President Obama did in the SOTU. Saying that 168 members of the John Birch Society are in the Congress doesnt move the needle. Please tell me what you think.
