Ive been on a classic movie kick. If you think old black and white movies are boring, Ive got a couple of recommendations that might change your mind. WHITE HEAT is a classic gangster/film noir crossover with James Cagney as a genuinely terrifying sociopath. An undercover cop has to get close to him in the slammer. Had me on the edge of my seat. ALL THE KINGS MEN also centers around a maniacal alpha male, but this one is a southern governor—who more than passing favors Huey Long—playing dirty pool and roiling the masses. Everyone in it is fabulous, but Mercedes McCambridge really steals the show. What a performance! I think next I need to see JOHNNY GUITAR, where McCambridge plays Joan Crawfords sister. Ill watch anything Ms. McCambridge has done. Check out this scene, Watch her reaction when he slaps her.
