Ive been paying some attention to this epidemic: Chikungunya. Mosquito control, very important, people! Deal with it as if your life depends on it. Horrible disease, and definitely here in our hemisphere. Not in in the part of South America, Uruguay, where I and Lisa Marie Mercer live. Not yet, and hopefully not at all. But it is in many places throughout Latin America, including Florida, USA (arguably by culture, and by travel patterns definitely, part of Latin America). In Central America in countries like Costa Rica and El Salvador. Here in the South America main continent itself, its mostly in Northern, especially north-eastern South America, in the parts of South America that are actually in the Northern Hemisphere. But theres also a big section of southeastern Brazil, which has shown transmission of infection, as you can see on this map: paho.org/hq/images/stories/AD/HSD/IR/Viral_Diseases/Chikungunya/CHIKV-Data-Caribe-2014-EW-45.jpg. Not in the southernmost state of Brasil, Rio Grade do Sul, that is immediately adjacent to Uruguays northeastern coast, and into a border town there ive actually driven to from her. But not all that far, either. Another painful and often deadly mosquito-borne disease, Dengue, is also in parts of southern Brazil. Our healthcare providers office always has official government brochures and posters out about fighting dengue by ensuring no standing water in your yard, proper mosquito control, etc. Dengue is not yet officially in Uruguay, but its closer than Chikungunya from some reports. Same skeeters. So be careful. Keep in mind the map. All of Florida and some other areas of the US South, every country in Central America, many Caribbean countries, many northern South America nations, are far more at risk and with verified infections, than way down here in Uruguay. Youre safer from it, and further away from the nearest cases of it, here in Uruguay than in, for example, Georgia, In fact, its already in the USA along the southeast coast and the Gulf Coast. In fact, maybe you should book a trip to Uruguay this US winter (our summer) instead of to the Caribbean or Florida!
