Ive been peripherally following the story about the RN traveling home from West Africa to Maine. When interviewed her personality is abrasive. This makes her a target for ridicule. Her quarantine has been supported by many of my friends in the medical profession. One thing that bothers me about this plan of quarantining healthcare professional returning from Africa is that it only addresses part of the problem. If you advocate for this policy, shouldnt you advocate for a policy that requires any healthcare professional in the US who has interaction with a confirmed Ebola patient to be quarantined? This means that if they care for the patient one day, they either need to go home and not return to work for 21 days, or they need to be quarantined in the hospital until 21 days following their last contact with the infected patient. This means ANY and ALL healthcare professionals that have ANY contact with the confirmed case. This includes all those in Texas, Nebraska, New York, and Georgia. If were going to advocate for quarantine, we better apply it equally and based on the same ideas used to apply it to the RN in Maine.
