Ive been plotting this short statement for some weeks now as on the third of this month (an important family date) having noticed that seven Irish speakers interacted with me in Sligos main st. before even one acquaintance without Irish eventually approached, I drew the conclusion that my network of Irish speakers in Sligo is now much stronger than my network of English speakers. Five of the seven speakers I only came to know in the last twenty of so years, they coming to Sligo, or to my notice in Sligo through Irish. In the late 1980s, I thought it notable on being addressed by two Irish speakers, again, one after the other, having thumbed back from Galway city, which I had up until then regarded as the only vibrant urban setting for Irish. The same holds through for other parts of Ireland, urban and rural, as some forty years plus have been mostly spent living with Irish be it at work or otherwise. This (English) fcbk page has started to reflect the reality as Ive removed myself to my other (Irish) page, which Ive started to clean up by liking all languages other than the ubiquitous English (90% of the English written on my Irish fcbk page is from Gaeilgeoirí). I now only tolerate some of the latter when accompanied by a translation. Ive decided to change this English fcbk page to the language I can shop in, Polish, over the next year (via a period of Welsh - Cymraeg wag, yn wir i chi- , just to give that language more scope) as I build up on my Polish. For the sake of courtesy, Ill be investing some time in c. 20 sentences of Lithuanian (for buying diesel, although I can buy the same in Irish in Droim Dhá Thiar on Saturdays), Latvian, and for family reasons Ill be taking a deeper interest in German from now on. Posts / videos coming onto this page in Arabic, French etc. and other languages I shall be liking and, gratefully, sharing as I can then share them again forward from my Irish fcbk page. By the start of 2016, a year down the line, I intend to have Polish as my second language after Irish as I find that there is so much one can do with it in Ireland. Up to now Ive enjoyed ordering my serniki i herbata in Polish and paying in Aldi similarly while trying not to mistake other peoples languages (Latvian, Slovakian, French are there locally) in the process, but by 2016, itll be a lot more.
