Ive been pondering something the last few days, with Facebook now requiring people to use their real names. What about those authors that use a pen name, will they also have to change their profiles? What about those who use a name to evade stalkers, with certain close friends knowing who they are, but the general public not, so that theyre not hunted. What about performers who use stage names? (Some have already come out and railed against FB for this policy). Seems to me that this was not a well thought out policy. It is one to put your personal info while registering, if it can be kept private. But for the persona allowed for public viewing, it should be up to the person, not Facebook. I have a lot of friends who use screen names, for various reasons. One uses one to hide from her husbands notice to be on FB so she can communicate with friends without having to hear about it from him. I have another friend, or more, who changed her profile name to escape the notice from an online stalker. I have author friends who use pen names, one of which seems to have had to change his screen name to suit FBs inane sensibilities. I have others who use their spiritual names as to keep their personal names private, as many believe that knowing someones name means having power over them. I hope that Facebook reverses their decision on this. It is not like they are the IRS or Social Security Dept; a law enforcement agency or such, it isnt FBs business to make people be fully open with the general public. Its just wrong.
